Facebook’s exponential growth and its immense popularity can be easily attributed to the very tight knit user privacy policies, because of which, Facebook has been considered as one of the most secure and reliable social networks on the internet. In lieu of the fact that Facebook has crossed the 300 million user milestone, the founder and CEO of this social network behemoth, Mark Zuckerberg has sent the users an open letter, stating that, a new set of policy policies are slated to go into effect in the next few days.
As per the new privacy policies, the users will now have the power to control their privacy settings on a per-post basis, that would enable them to select which users are permitted to see their feeds. Furthermore, the regional networks concept of Facebook will be taken off entirely to further enhance the privacy policies of the website. Citing the example of China, Mark has stated that the current privacy protocols become redundant.
Along with the new privacy policies, that were actually announced way back in the month of July, Mr. Zuckerberg has also announced that Facebook has acquired 50 million more users in the last two months alone, thereby bringing the entire user base to 350 million, an astonishing landmark, enjoyed by very few websites.
Also, with the new privacy control settings, Facebook will provide the users with a settings page that will walk the users through the new settings. Facebook will also provide recommendations, as per individual privacy levels.
In his open letter to the users, Mark Zuckerberg said,
“We’re adding something that many of you have asked for — the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, we’ll also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.
Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks we’ll ask you to review and update your privacy settings. You’ll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When you’re finished, we’ll show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once you’re done you’ll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.
We’ve worked hard to build controls that we think will be better for you, but we also understand that everyone’s needs are different. We’ll suggest settings for you based on your current level of privacy, but the best way for you to find the right settings is to read through all your options and customize them for yourself. I encourage you to do this and consider who you’re sharing with online.”
