Facebook buys FriendFeed

Facebook announced on this Monday (10/8) the purchase of FriendFeed. According to the official report, all of the current employees of FriendFeed will be integrated into Facebook, while the four founders of the company will occupy important positions in it. The companies didn’t publish the value of the transaction.

Several resources of FriendFeed served as inspiration for many of the functionalities of Facebook, as the possibility to import applications of third parties, the inclusion of videos of YouTube, links of Flickr or results of surveys. Other reproduced resources were the comments and the possibility of approving a post in Facebook.

In spite of those functionalities, FriendFeed didn’t become popular and the audience stayed more or less stable most of this year, while Facebook and Twitter exploded in popularity.

It is not still clear what will happen to FriendFeed after the integration with Facebook, social network that has 340 million users in the world. Bret Taylor, one of the co-founders of the acquired site, said that FriendFeed will continue usually operating.

The business among the two companies opens space for several speculations. As the two sites have functions that they are put upon, exists the possibility that FriendFeed can disappear in a future not very distant.
