Even though Twitter has been able to gather a significant user base in a short period of time, yet according to the latest comScore report, Twitter, one of the biggest and most widely used micro-blogging website is still a long way from giving Facebook any sort of competition. As per the data released by comScore for the month of September ’09, Facebook has an estimated 95.5 million visitors, as against 92.2 million visitors for the month of August. This amounts to a hike of over 3 million users for Facebook in just 30 days.

As far as Twitter is concerned, for the month of September, the micro blogging network hasn’t shown a significant growth, in fact, the website seems to be standing at a stalemate. In the month of August, Twitter counted for 20.8 million visitors and for the month of September, the website has bare registered any growth, with a visitor base of just 20.9 million.

The success of Facebook can be justified by the fact that, the website is currently running over 30,000 servers to support its ever growing user base. In addition to the whopping number of servers, an estimated 25 terabytes (TB) of log data is recorded each for Facebook, across all 30,000 servers. In addition to the hardware, Facebook staff has also witnessed an exponential growth, with 230 engineers in service full time, inclusive of the 900 strength strong staff.

Facebook is now on the verge of reaching a landmark 100 million visitors in the United States alone and with this staggering figure looming in the face of Twitter, the visitor gap between the two websites has now reached to an astounding 75 million visitors, with Twitter being able to achieve only 25 million visitors in the United States. Although, this statistical comparison is centered around the user base in the United States, according to comScore estimates, Twitter is lagging far behind in respect to international users as well.
