According to the Mozilla Foundation, more than 5 million copies of Firefox 3.5 were downloaded in the first 24 hours after its launch.

Available in over 70 languages (Translation thanks to the efforts of the international community of users) and in versions for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, only this version browser now accounts for 3% of world market for browsers, more than the total market competitors as Opera.

Adding up all the versions, Firefox accounts for about 28% of the world market, against 65% of Internet Explorer, according to the site whos.amung.us. The third placed would be Google Chrome, with just over 3%.

Launched this week, Firefox 3.5 has as one of its main features the new JavaScript engine, called “TraceMonkey,” that promises to accelerate the performance of Web 2.0 sites such as GMail.

There is also a private browsing mode, which erases all traces of your web tracks once the browser window is closed and support the new HTML5 standard, including streaming video and audio without plugins.

Despite the success, Firefox 3.5 failed to beat the record of his predecessor. Supported by a campaign that has spread to include a full-page ad in The New York Times, Firefox 3.0 (released in June 2008) exceeded 8 million downloads in the first 24 hours after launch.

Well, the actual number of downloads may not be too impressive if you consider the installer of Firefox 3.5 FAILS on numerous occasions. On my Vista Home Premium PC, my system asked to redownload about 4-5 times… I also tried to install 3.5 (from 3.0) in Safe Mode but nothing works. Not good.
