The clean, affordable solar electricity will now reach your rooftop, thanks to First Solar, the unbeatable competent of the thin film solar industry. The company has recently invested $30 million in San Francisco’s residential and commercial solar installer, SolarCity for 100 megawatts worth thin film solar panels for a period of five years. First Solar is planning to make these thin-film panels available for residential markets.

Many of the industry insiders feel that the thin-film panels would work only for commercial rooftops and that the less efficient thin-films would need more space to provide the same energy though they are cheaper compared to the conventional ones. But, SolarCity’s director of communications Jonathan Bass thinks otherwise. According to him, people use solar panels only to reduce the load over their power grid but don’t rely on it to provide the entire energy needs of their homes. He however admits that it is too early to decide if these are really cheaper than the usual ones.
SolarCity will make its services available in around ten new states next year. Let’s wish the joint venture by these two companies works out and they succeed in providing cheaper solar power on a domestic front.
