Rio de Janeiro has witnessed 28 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Approximately 95 people have been reported to be dead after being the victims of flood and landslides.

A state of emergency is declared in the second biggest city of Brazil. All the major roads are said to be flooded. Public schools remain closed. All are advised to stay indoors. In areas which are likely to be flooded or prone to landslide, people are suggested to vacate. In many hilly area of Rio, many shanty houses were buried by the mudslide.

The drainage system and the city’s ability to handle crisis such as these were a major concern given that Rio was to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Rio de Janeiro’s poor administration by the local official was criticized. The city was in a mess with flooded roads, power cuts, muddy roads in few areas, uprooted trees and of course the continuous torrential rain. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also said that the officials must maintain strict building standards in the landslide prone areas.
