Former French President, Jacques Chirac has been ordered to stand trial on the charges of corruption levied on him, since his time served as the mayor of Paris. The order was given by a French investigating magistrate.
The order passed by the magistrate’s office will create a page of dark history, as Mr. Chirac will be the first former French head of state to stand trail on the charges of corruption and will surely dent a glorious career of the for French President, that has spanned for 30 years. However, there is a possibility that, the public prosecutors might be able to challenge the trial orders, on the grounds of lack of evidence.
Jacques Chirac, who served as the President of France from 1995 to the year 2007, can be sentenced to 10 years in prison and fine of $210,000 for the corruption charges. In case the public prosecutors appeal against the trial orders, the judiciary process will take a lot of time to establish whether the former president, should in fact be asked to stand trial or not. The charges against Mr. Chirac date back to the time, when he served in the capacity of mayor of Paris, where he has been accused of creating appointments for fictitious positions in lieu of political favors.
