Founder of the Gulf Cartel in Mexico arrested

El Goyo arrest

The founder of the Mexican drug cartel ‘The Gulf,’ Gregorio Sauceda alias ‘El Goyo,’ ‘El Caramuela,’ or ‘Metro 2’ and one of the US DEA most wanted has been arrested in Mexico. Sauceda was apprehended in Matamoros on the US border, in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

Sauceda is accused of organized crime and violations of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives. He is also the seventh on the Federal police’s list of the Zetas group of assassins. ‘El Goyo,’ 44, was a former cop and government official before turning to the very lucrative trade of drug trafficking.

Seized during his arrest were five assault rifles, an antitank rocket launcher M72A3, 30 magazines, and 4,575 pieces of assorted bullets. Sauceda was arrested with two of his accomplices, Gabriela Del Toro Copto, said to be his wife, and Miguel Angel Reyes Grajales or ‘El Güero.’

Sauceda was ‘key to the formation of the Gulf Cartel, headed by Osiel Cárdenas Guillén.’ According to Mexican authorities, he was known to enter the United States every month with an average of 10 tons of cocaine and 30 tons of marijuana.
