L1 Concept Frankfurt 2009: E Up! And L1 Concept Cars From Volkswagen

The Frankfurt Motor Show has become a veritable platform for companies to introduce their concept cars to the world. Often enough, just the association of a concept car with IAA is enough excuse for the car to be granted production rights! Although there were many more concept cars at this year’s show, two concepts that stood out were the E-Up! and L1.

The E-Up! pure electric car by Volkswagen is powered by a 80hp engine giving out 155 ft-lbs of torque. The 3+1 seater can reach 62mph in 11.3 seconds; plus, it can take you 130km using up the energy used in the li-ion battery. The zero-emissions VW E-Up! is the fourth concept in the Up! series and would go into production in 2013.

Debuting alongside this was the much flaunted L1 concept car from the same company. Interestingly, not all of this concept car will go into production but its carbonfibre-reinforced plastic construction and hybrid powertrain would be seen again. According to their head of research, VW intends to use the L1 for the development of new technologies that would be introduced later. The L1 has an 800cc turbodiesel engine and 14bhp electric motor. The car has an average fuel consumption of 205mpg and 36g/km CO2 emissions.
