This could be one of the most tragic train accidents in recent times. A freight train carrying natural petroleum gas derailed and exploded in northern part of Italy. The burning wagons crashed into houses of Viareggio town in the middle of the night, killing more than 16 people and injuring many. The houses have collapsed due to fire and many are fear trapped in the rubble. The tragedy struck in the middle of the night giving little or no chance of escape.
Worst may not be over since remaining wagons carrying liquefied petroleum gas are still lying there and fire is still not under control. Fire fighters and emergency services have been pressed in to action. The scene has been described as ‘apocalyptic’ by one of the witness. The village became an inferno within minutes as gas and fire spread. Some people jumped out of windows to survive and others were burnt to death. Many have suffered severe burn injuries. More than thousand people had to be evacuated as 300 fire fighters tried to control the fire. Some people had miraculous escape while others were not so lucky. The death toll is expected to rise as there are some people still missing.
