The Haiti earthquake has left behind nearly one million orphans and these innocent kids who have lost parents and homes have become the most vulnerable targets for predatory child traffickers. There are shocking reports of a boy being offered for sale for mere $50 and poor desperate parents giving up their children to foreigners for better future. The future of Haiti orphans and children of affected families seems highly grim and uncertain.
Aftermath of any disaster leaves behind toddlers and children who cannot fend for themselves and it takes time to put infrastructure with care-givers in place to take care of them thus leaving them exposed to all kinds of risks. Haiti’s devastating earthquake has destabilized the country politically since many ministers are dead and government infrastructure has totally collapsed and law enforcement agencies are totally absent. There many instances of looting of camps and relief materials too. In all this chaos it is the small orphan children who are facing real horrors and uncertain journeys ahead. Even before earthquake child trafficking was a major problem in Haiti mainly because of extreme poverty. Now it has become uphill task for government and international agencies to monitor because of the sheer number of orphan children and magnitude of devastation.
