In the latest attack on the westerners in Kabul, two foreigners were killed in a shooting spree near the Sherpur area of Kabul in front of a courier company. The foreigners were apparently Christian workers and that is being told as the reason for their murders. Gayle Williams, 34, and one of those killed, had both South African and British citizenships.
This raises question on the security that is being provided for foreigners. Kabul is known to be relatively safe for foreigners and the latest attack breaks the trust that aid workers have about their safety in the capital city. The increasing violence could be attributed to the growing influence that the Taleban rebels have on the northern Afghans where the support for Taleban is known to be lesser when compared to the Kandahar region.
Perhaps, a tighter security arrangement in areas frequented by foreigners need to be put in place. Afghans in Kabul have also felt the need for better security arrangements and the present government seems to be lax about handling infiltration into the city. Kabul, by far, is the most foreigner-friendly city in Afghanistan and the city is known to have a number of joints where aid workers frequent for a time-off from the tribal and rural regions of Afghanistan.
