By around 4000 euros, you can buy a supercomputer that fits on top of your desk. The machines, mounted by several companies, are equipped with graphics processing units of Tesla C1060. Chips are developed by Nvidia with no less than 240 nuclei of parallel processing.

One chip has 250 times the processing capacity of a standard PC, according to the company. The supercomputers – that looks like a conventional desktop – equipped with the technology are designed to use a traditional taken as a source of energy and are quiet enough to be on the table of the office, lists the Nvidia.

For now, the machines will be sold to researchers and universities. But the largest manufacturer of PCs in the world, Dell, has shown interest in taking the supermachines to the common user.

This new line of supercomputers is capable of dealing with tasks that require a number of simultaneous calculations so great that today are made by groups of machines that occupy one quarter and full cost 70,000 euros.

Among the likely uses, are searches in biological and medical areas, applications in the field of exploration of oil and gas, and calculations that could serve the aerospace engineering industry.
