Gmail Now Provides More Freedom With Labels

Gmail, the free email service from Google has fast evolved into the most popular mail program on the internet. Millions of users have switched from their previous e-mail providers such as Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and others to take benefit of all the awesome features provided by Gmail, such as immense storage capacity, accurate in-mail search results, free POP 3 access and much more.

Now, Google has incorporated more new option in the ‘labeling’ function of Gmail. With the help of labels, users are able to classy their mails as per the sender or subject of the mail, just as you would do in Outlook Express.

Label Location:

The Gmail labels have been moved to the left side pane of the inbox and in case of Arabic, Hebrew, or Urdu users of Gmail, labels have been moved to the right side pane of the inbox. Previously, labels for Gmail had their own section, however, now they are bunched together just above the Google chat application.

With the new hide & show system, users can now choose which labels to show and can hide the ones they do not require. By default, Google shows the labels that are more important to a user based on hi mail usage pattern and hides the irrelevant ones. To see the list of the hidden label, all a user has to do, is to click on the ‘more’ link.

Users also have the option of deleting a label that is useless to them. This option can be accessed by clicking the down-arrow, that is positioned on the left side of each label. For mass label settings, the options are available in the ‘Labels Tab’ under the ‘Settings’ of Gmail.

According to the Official Gmail Blog,

“All of these changes also mean the end of Right-side Labels, an experimental Gmail Labs feature. This is the first Labs feature we’re retiring. We realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels, so if you feel strapped for left navigation screen real estate without it, try turning on Right-side Chat in Labs instead.”
