Google Adds a New Feature to Google Maps: ‘What’s Here’

Since the launch of Google Maps on February 8th, 2005, it has been proven to be one of the most widely used Google services around the world. Google Maps provide street maps and routing instructions for travelers on foot, bicycle, car, or on public transport among other useful information.

Today, via the Official Google Lat Long Blog, Google announced that an all new feature has been added in Google Maps known as ‘What’s Here’. This feature is extremely useful for tourists and for those who need to know exactly where they are. By right clicking on a certain location, the option of ‘What’s Here’ becomes visible. This feature displays information for the location that you wish to know about.

‘What’s Here’ works by taking into account the zoom level and then provides the users with the information about the location based on the geographical data in the Google Maps database. According to the Google Lat Long Blog;

“If you’re zoomed in closely on Manhattan, you can get the full address of a point by clicking on “What’s here?”. Additionally, by combining this with the “At this address” feature that you may have seen in the left-hand panel, you can also see a list of the businesses located at that place.”

The technology behind ‘What’s Here’ is more commonly known as ‘reverse geocoding’ and it has been available in the Google Maps API for some time now. Developers can use this API and reverse geocoding to their own maps.
