Google Drops Auto-Follow Feature in Buzz

Looks like folks at the Google Buzz team are really working hard to work on the privacy settings based on the feedback submitted by the Buzz users. Google Buzz is Google’s new social network, which they launched just four days ago. Of the people who started using Buzz, many were apparently unhappy with the privacy settings particularly with the auto-follow model wherein Buzz automatically sets the user to follow people they exchange e-mails and chat with very frequently.

Now, Buzz is moving to auto-suggest model, wherein the user will not automatically be set up to follow anyone until he/she has reviewed the suggestions and clicked “Follow selected people and start using Buzz” option. In the next couple of weeks, Google will again show a similar version of this new start up experience to those who have started using Buzz in order to give them the second chance to review and confirm the people they are following. Buzz will also not connect the user’s public Picasa Web Albums and Google Reader shared items automatically.

Buzz is also going to add a Buzz tab to Gmail Settings from where the user will be able to hide Buzz from Gmail or disable completely. I am sure, by now the Buzz users will be much relaxed and not be panicky anymore about their privacy being intruded upon. Looks like, Google Buzz just started this venture based on trial and error method. If they only had thought about the users’ concerns for privacy, they would not be working so hard to make the changes now. Thank God, it happened with Google. They at least care for their users.
