Google Gives Three Years For The Demise Of Desktops As The Primary Digital Interactive Outlet

At the Digital Landscapes conference at UCD, Google’s vice president of Global Ad Operations. John Herlihy, expressed his opinion in regards to the exponentially expanding mobile internet market, stating that, the desktops would be irrelevant in the next three and will be replaced by mobile devices as the primary digital interactive mediums. He believes that, very soon people will turn to the mobile devices for conducting their online activities and giving the example of Japan, where most of the users have in fact turned to smart phone, released his predictions for the desktop computers.

In his speech, Mr. Herlihy said that, Google focuses primarily on providing the providing the advertisers with the most lucrative results, so that, the company can keep its existence ensured in the future. However, his remarks in regards to the desktops ringed a similar tone as that of the Google CEO, Eric Schmidt who has stated quite the same facts at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, where he said that, the computers will soon be replaces by mobile devices and due the rapid increase in the sales of such devices, the day isn’t far when computers will in fact become irrelevant.

If one looks at the statement from Google’s perspective, it makes sense that the desktops will slowly lose their importance because more and more across the globe are now switching to mobile devices and as the technology advances, so has there been an incredible increase in the services provided to the user via the mobile platform.

According to John Herlihy,

“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs. Mobile makes the world’s information universally accessible. Because there’s more information and because it will be hard to sift through it all, that’s why search will become more and more important. This will create new opportunities for new entrepreneurs to create new business models – ubiquity first, revenue later.”
