Google goes green

Google announced late on Tuesday it signed an agreement for 20 years to purchase wind power from Nextar Energy Resources II Story County plant in the state of Iowa, to supply some of their data centers.

The Official Google Blog has announced a further step towards its goal of sustainability announced in 2007. The publication said that goal would be composed of three steps: to minimize power consumption, seek renewable energy sources and buy carbon credits to offset what the company cannot reduce or eliminate.

The giant search highlights the success of this initial proposal, such as data centers with low power consumption and solar power plant in Mountain View, California.

The Agreement for Purchase of Energy Company announced that, as early as on July 30, the company will buy 114 megawatts from wind energy. Google also ensures that the energy generated by wind turbines will be enough to supply several data centers. In addition, the company believes that the agreement will stimulate the construction of more plants of this type, since the lack of incentives would be a significant inhibitor to sustainable development.

The website Tech Radar believes that this measure is an attempt to overcome his fear (and all the negative publicity involved) that their data centers can be major contributors to global warming.
