Recession has hurt our economies so badly that advertising is the last thing companies are seeking to put money at. However, there are still many companies that are seeking to advertise online to reach the huge masses that use the Internet. Google has suffered a lot too and has come up with a new scheme to drive traffic and generate more ad clicks. They have recently launched what are being touted as the ‘Expandable Ads’.
These are ads that fit in a smaller box but when clicked they expand so that you can watch the image or video without going to another page, or even ruining the site’s look. The idea is to not distract the site visitors by opening ads when they scroll over or just watch it, but they would expand only when a user clicks on the ad voluntarily. This way, everyone seems to gain.
The site will get advertisers even when the space is less, advertisers get targeted audience and the user gets advertisements he wants. We shall have to wait and watch if this new way of advertising would be a success. In my opinion, this could help regulate a rather wild west like situation in online advertising.
