Finally, the record set by Bob Schumacher in the Iron Duck in March 1999 has been broken by Richard Jenkins, a British engineer from Hampshire on 26th March, 2009. Driving his Greenbird car on the dry plains of Ivanpah Lake in Nevada, Mr. Jenkins clocked 126.1mph.
Nothing comes easy and, it took 10 years of hard work to design the super fast vehicle, which eventually helped him break the record. All thanks to his Greenbird, which is a carbon fibre composite vehicle that uses nothing else but wind for power. This is quite fascinating that a wind powered vehicle with just 30mph can hit a speed of 126.1mph. Interestingly, the only metalwork used in the vehicle is for the wing bearings and the wheel unit.
Greenbird weighs 600kg when it’s standing still but at speed, it weighs over a tonne due to the effect of the wings. This is truly marvelous and I genuinely feel Mr. Jenkins deserved the record for his hard work and the unique designs he adopted to design the vehicle. I wonder who would break his record next!
