Sixty million Latin Americans use the social network Facebook, which represents 17% of 500 million worldwide users of this service, reports a survey released in the U.S. on Monday (19).
According to the study of SMLatam, Mexicans lead the list with 12.5 million users, followed by Argentina and Colombia, with 10 and 9.7 million respectively.
In classification, a surprising fact is the absence of Brazil in first place with 4.6 million, which would be explained with the Brazilian public’s affection with another social network, Orkut – which came before Facebook and would have greater diffusion in the country.
Already the country with the lowest number of participants is Nicaragua, with 176 000 users, while in Ecuador it was proven the parity between the number of internet users of both sexes, a total of 1.2 million people.
The overall number of 60 million means that one third of South American users of social media have an active profile on Facebook – 52% men and 48% women.
The survey was conducted during the months of June and also shows that 70% of Facebook users do not live in the United States.
