Industrial waste treatment services emerged in Europe as early as the beginning of the 1970s. These, however, are relatively new in China, especially, the hazardous waste treatment services. Rules and regulations in the country concerning hazardous waste treatment facilities are far from satisfactory. Since hazardous waste treatment poses high risk, both good equipment and strict execution strategies are necessary for the industry.
In China, there is currently no specific legislation concerning hazardous wastes liability. This is the reason why environmental wastes, particularly the hazardous kind, may simply proliferate and hardly penalized. In turn, hazardous waste management services are also difficult to market in the country because people can simply get away with dumping or emitting hazardous waste. Hazardous waste pollution is not a criminal act in China.
While there are hazardous waste management service companies in China, most of them are not strictly monitored. For example, these companies do not transport hazardous wastes using qualified vehicles. Over and above this sordid reality, the most crucial problem in China to be addressed is the lack of awareness of the proper treatment of hazardous waste.
It is also nearly impossible to forecast the Chinese hazardous waste management services market because this market largely depends on governmental strategies. There is one hazardous waste incinerator project that is co-invested by Shanghai and Hong Kong companies. Though this is said to be state-of-the-art and pioneering, China still lacks countrywide maturity and responsibility when it comes to managing its hazardous wastes.
