Singapore has a world-renowned and well-established healthcare and medical system. The World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked the country’s healthcare as one of the world’s current best. As far back as 2000, the WHO ranked Singapore’s healthcare system as the best in Asia and sixth best in the world. The Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) ranked it as the third best in the world in 2003. Singapore was also voted as the country best prepared to handle a major medical crisis in Asia. In 2007, Singapore was voted the “Best Medical/Wellness Tourism Destination” by TravelWeekly (Asia) Industry Awards 2007. The central government of Singapore allocates and spends 1.3 % of GDP on health.

Nine hospitals and two medical centers in Singapore have received Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. These are one-third of all JCI-accredited facilities in entire Asia. Seven hospitals are International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified. This adherence to international standards of excellence assures the availability of internationally accredited facilities, renowned physicians, and systems of continued excellence, assured safety, and established trustworthiness.

Singapore’s blood supply ranks among the safest in the world. The country’s Centre for Transfusion Medicine, internationally renowned for its high standards of blood safety practices and management of blood transfusion services, is recognized as a WHO Collaborating Center.
