Hitachi Software Engineering Co Ltd has launched the StarBoard, which is being seen as an attempt to break into the education market. These electronic blackboards are designed with the School New Deal Program which has been proposed by the Ministry of Education in Japan. Each blackboard costs 700,000 Yen and would be installed in all the elementary and junior high schools.
The product is tentatively called PX-DUO-50 and comes with a 50 inch PDP. It is assisted by embedded personal computers and a coordination detection device. Also, the two infrared cameras in the system help the teacher in character input and character recognition. It even comes with a TV tuner and movable stand. Teachers across the world might be interested in this electronic blackboard as it makes teaching a less tedious job.
Moreover, it also helps the children in understanding lessons through its interactivity and exquisite display. There is no information about either the price or availability. It may not be viable in developing countries where even blackboards are expensive to be installed. In such a case, reduction of manufacturing price by mass production seems to be an option.
