The war in former Yugoslavia during the 1990s helped create many new independent states, which were soon embroiled in a saga of war, genocides and death. While the Bosniaks suffered a lot in motivated massacres in Srebrenica and elsewhere by Bosnian Serbs, the Serbs and the Croats have has their share of harrowing tales as well.

The unimaginable human suffering and death resulted in incomprehensible grief to people across borders and continents. Native artists have begun on a quest to record these emotions and grief, and the indomitable human spirit if survival in their art and sculpture. Art and the Balkans have thus given people elsewhere a chance to understand these emotions and experiences.

Painters from Bosnia have created art work that gives a glimpse into the minds of the victims who bore the brunt of genocides. While this might be the case in most strife struck countries, the Balkans seem to have seen it all, in the worst form. It would be interesting to check out more Balkan art and see through the eyes of the victims and perpetrators about this colossal human tragedy.
