Monday marked the day for a successful test firing of the indigenously developed Prithvi II short range ballistic missile. The mainline nuclear capable deterrent of the Indian armed forces, Prithvi II with a range of 350 km was launched today from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, at the outskirts of the state of Orissa. According to official reports, two missiles were test fired in quick succession and both achieved perfect flight status and accomplished all pre-determined goals of the test flight.

The pride of India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Prithvi II is a short range ballistic missile (SRBM), that was designed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program started by the Government of India in the year 1983. Today’s test firing and the missile trajectories were closely monitored and tracked by various long-range radars along with electro-optic telemetry stations with the sole goal of collecting accurate data from the launch.

According to various sources, the highly anticipated and banked upon weapon in the Indian arsenal, Prithvi II has already been inducted into the Indian military forces and is under the command of the strategic force command’s special group. As per the official estimates, Prithvi II is approximately 900 meters in length and is capable of delivering conventional and nuclear payloads to the intended targets.

Today’s launch of the two Prithvi II missiles included both solid and liquid fuels and were launched at different ranges to test and confirm the operational status of the missiles.
