The emergence of new technology has always led to a blind race for resources and platforms that can accommodate the new tech, as is in the case of smart phones such as Apple iPhone, Motorola Droid and the upcoming range of new state of the art mobile devices such as Google’s Nexus One. These devices work as wireless communication platforms requiring the principal ingredient, airwaves, which in today’s satellite and wireless communication have become incredibly finite, just as our precious natural resources.

With the current boom in communication technology, wireless network carriers are now going through sleepless nights, as they inch closer to the end of air waves and thus effectively resulting in a demise of their future plans. Currently, the frequencies are shared by a host of agencies, both private and public, such as the air traffic control, law enforcement agencies, emergency personnel, telecommunication networks and most importantly, the military, that has now spread a complicated web of communication network for its use.

Keeping the scarcity in mind, some of the wireless companies in America are now turning to the government and are requesting wider access to air wave frequencies, irrespective of the consequences or the need such frequencies in vital areas of functioning. According to Christopher Guttman-McCabe (President, Regulatory Affairs, CTIA-The Wireless Association),

“Spectrum is the equivalent of our highways. That’s how we move our traffic. And the volume of that traffic is increasing so dramatically that we need more lanes. We need more highways.”

However, Rep. Rick Boucher who is also the acting chairman of the House Commerce Subcommittee on Communications is quite optimistic on the government’s ability to meet the ever rising demand of air waves and believes that, Washington would be able to satisfy the growing wireless market.
