International Community Seeking New Economic Sanctions Against North Korea

With its ongoing nuclear weapons program and continuous missile tests, North Korea is expected to be even more isolated from the international community and development than ever before. Ever since the short and medium missile tests carried out by Pyongyang this month, United Nations Security Council and other other concerned nations have been meeting on a regular basis of send out a concrete response.

The United States and the United Nations are expected to reach an agreement, where numerous North Korean firms would be black listed on the charges of supporting Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile program. Sporadic news reports had been circling for quite a while, stating that many countries were discussing the option of hitting North Korea’s economy. Japanese Ambassador, Yukio Takasu has now confirmed these reports and have stated that a concrete resolution would be reached by Thursday.

According to a Senior U.S official,

“North Korea engages in a variety of deceptive financial practices that are intended to obscure the true nature of their transactions.”

U.S has been working hard to reveal the various trading methods employed by North Korea to acquire weapons and banned products. Various U.S officials have been meeting with diplomats of other countries in an effort to gather their support for the new sanctions and also to warn them, about the North Korean trade practices.

The new sanctions would not only include North Korean firms to be blacklisted, but will also highlight individuals and other means through which North Korea trades with the outside world. According to officials, North Korea is in a habit of creating shell companies and use them for large financial transactions, that otherwise would come into the eyes of intelligence agencies almost immediately.
