A little known website, GetJar.com, that has hardly put in any efforts in advertising its online existence has fast grown into the second largest mobile phone applications store on the internet. GetJar was conceived about five years ago, in the holy land of Information & Technology, Silicon Valley and as of now has about 57,000 applications for virtually every brand and model of mobile phones that support applications, thus making the second mobile app store on the net. Next in line is Google’s Android Market with 10,000 applications followed closely by Blackberry App World with 2,000 applications.
Even without much fanfare and virtually no advertising, still GetJar has been sailing through the mobile applications world and since its inception in the year 2005, has already provided 650 million applications to the users and it also has more than 300,000 registered developers who submit their applications to be downloaded from the website. GetJar recorded an astounding 55 million downloads from its website for the month of October, as against the 15 million downloads recorded for the same period last year.
On the other hand, the Apple Apps Store, recorded 2 billion application downloads since the month of September this year. Apple iTunes Apps Store went online in July 2008 and is known to be far bigger than GetJar. Apple Inc. has about 125,000 developers creating applications for the Apple iPhone. The Google Android Market was launched this year and so far has 40 million application downloads.
According to Patrick Mork (V.P Marketing, GetJar),
“With the GetJar store, consumers don’t have to worry about whether they have an Android phone or a Java phone. They don’t need to know which model Nokia they have. We take the fragmentation out of the equation by auto-detecting what apps can run on which phones and offering consumers those applications.”
