Calm seems to have descended in Tehran after week of historic protests and people’s uprising against election results. But local people call it “calm of the grave”. The mass protests may not be visible anymore but the storm of dissent is still brewing. Every night after 10 pm people go on the rooftops and voice protests through chants against the government thus defying orders.
Basij militia is going about using force to dissuade the protesters. The media is being gagged totally. Foreign journalists have been asked to leave Iran and television, internet networks are being blocked too. Basij is reported to be going about destroying property and satellite dish antennas to instill fear in people. There is a constant pressure on protestors. Even opposition candidate Mousavi has been banned from travelling outside country.
Iranian President Ahmedinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei seem determined to break this revolutionary movement against election results which got international attention and support. They have asked US and UK not to interfere in their affairs and stop instigating people. Earlier US President Barrack Obama had praised the bravery of the protesters. But can they stop a storm by brute force?
