Based on testimonies and reports, at least 200 protesters have so far been killed in Iran, while 56 other people have disappeared during the protests in Tehran. Torture of political prisoners has also been rampant. One such case is 24-year old student Javadifar Amir who suffered fatal beatings. He was earlier ‘arrested in Tehran for participating in a demonstration against the highly dubious re-election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.’ His father was later ordered to collect his corpse.
Evidence shows that ‘security forces have systematically engaged in killings and torture in their efforts to crush the opposition.’
According to one investigator, “The use of rape and torture was similar across prisons in Tehran and the provinces. It is difficult not to conclude that the highest authorities planned and ordered these actions. Local authorities would not dare take such actions without word from above.”
Research documents reveal that Tehran has recorded the deaths of at least 200 demonstrators. 56 disappearances have not been accounted for and identified. 173 others were killed in other cities. These figures are several times higher than those officially provided.
The victims are said to have been killed due to violent blows to the head or shot in the head or chest, in what appears to be a shoot-to-kill policy.
