Is Twitter Twitting Its Last Tweet?

In the ancient times before internet became such a hit with the common man, it was normal to wave at a person. With the net came the age where people would ping each other, or even tag and poke them. With Twitter, greetings took a slightly more musical note with people Tweet-ing everyone they knew.

Twitter may have found a lot of fans in the past few months with everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Oprah Winfrey becoming huge Twitter fans and competing to find more Twits, er I mean fans. However, although it is not so difficult to find people jumping onto the bandwagon the moment a celebrity does something, Twitter finds that it is increasingly difficult to keep people Twitting. According to research done by Nielson Online, most people who start Twitting don’t continue to do so after the first month or so. It turns out that out of all the people who start Twitting, over 60% don’t bother to keep up the habit.

Twitter has been quite popular the past few months and gave a horrendous amount of competition to other popular social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Twitter’s ability to retain their fans had, however, increased since Oprah Winfrey started Twitting. With celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres trying to make a record and competing with each other, perhaps we’re digging a virtual grave for Twitter way too soon.
