A group of Jews, many of them ex-suboficiais and fervent faithful, endeavor to make known what many in Israel knows, but very few dare to tell. The activists of Breaking the Silence raised the voice in a country anesthetized front the suffering of the enemy. They want to break the thick wall surrounding the aberrant practices of many soldiers to punish attacks on rocks thrown by young Palestinians. The complaint has a high price. But some military, which are an exception to the rule, does not support what they see and break the silence. It happens rarely.
This is the case with of D, 19 years old, soldier of the Kfir Brigade, brigade which is the most involved in malpractice in the West Bank. D couldn’t stay quiet after he saw in Hares on March 26. He described to his superiors the behavior of many comrades and refused to provide certain services in the West Bank. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison.
“The common view among the soldiers of the Haruv battalion is that the Arabs are wild animals to be destroyed,” complains D.
There are soldiers who believe that security measures are essential, but they hate the humiliation. Humiliations are not the exception, but sometimes they are rule.
Kfir Brigade’s operations – in which hundreds of soldiers belongs to the right-wing extremists of religious groups – are in the West Bank. Sometimes they accompanying the settlers in their assaults on Palestinian towns. And they help in the destruction of homes with mothers and children present.
Although the Israeli Army denies, Israelis NGOs vehemently reject such statements. The sentencing by judges to soldiers in recent years, which is close to zero, could suggest that these abuses would be something of the imagination, but the reality is another.
