Jacko’s glove fetches $49,000 at auction

Michael Jackson’s trademark white bejeweled glove recently sold at auction in Melbourne for A$57,600 or $49,000. It was ‘nearly twice the price auctioneers expected.’ “There was a huge amount of interest in the week leading up to the sale. We were still pretty surprised by the price,” said Charlotte Stanes of the auction house Bonhams and Goodman. National head of collectables for the auction house, Giles Moon, was ‘astounded’ by the winning auction price.

This was the first Jackson glove to go on sale since Jackson died in June. The auctioned white glove ‘was worn by Jackson on the day he married Debbie Rowe, the mother of his two elder children.’

The successful buyer is Warwick Stone, bidding on behalf of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The final auction price was reached ‘after a bidding war between collectors in Australia and the United States.’

In Sidney in November 1996 during his HIStory tour, Jackson married Rowe. At the end of his concert, he ‘threw the glove to Bill Hibble, a collector of music and film memorabilia, who has since died. Hibble’s mother put the glove up for auction.’

Because of his worldwide popularity as a pop icon, Jackson memorabilia will surely be up for grabs. Expect this trend in the coming months as Jackson posthumously proves that he still has a huge global following.
