28-year old Spencer Potter decided to sell his phone number along with his DJ Business on E-Bay and bidding for this number had reached $364000 when I last checked the site.

What’s special about it? The number is (201) 867-5309. Anyone who’s ever tuned on the radio in the 1980s would know it. These 7 digits stuck in the minds of millions since Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny” hit the Top 10 in 1982. The song was about a guy who finds Jenny’s name and number scribbled on a bathroom wall.

Five years ago, Potter working as a disc jockey for weddings and parties, needed a phone number for his business. On a lark he asked if 867-5309 was available. To his surprise, it was. It seemed like a great deal for a music-oriented business — the most famous musical phone number.

But almost as soon as he plugged the phone in, he realized that this was to turn into a nightmare. The number began ringing off the wall and hasn’t stopped since. He gets about 30 calls a day from drunks at bars, bored cold callers who figure “why not?” but mmostly from a lot of ’80s fanatics.

At the end of the auction, Potter hopes to make enough to spend two months backpacking in Europe. No matter what people think about Potter’s idea to try and make money through this number, atleast it beats investing in the stock market.
