Kalkin’s Shipping The Idea Of A Good Home

Agreed. Adam Kalkin’s idea of making homes out of shipping containers isn’t particularly unique. We have had the likes of Jennifer Siegal and Lot-Ek gave us a dose of the same some ten years ago. Although, it was nice to see their approach to the home as a gritty reaction against the tidy white surfaces of modernism, but we think nobody has utilized the shipping container more creatively than Kalkin.

A New Jersey architect and artist, Kalkin first rose to prominence when he designed a coffee shop in a shipping container last year for Ily. Well, that was just the tip of the iceberg because the man has also designed luxurious homes, museum additions and refugee housings from these very containers.

We have gained information that Kalkin’s prefab homes (that’s what he likes to call them) can be made from one to twelve shipping containers. The cost ranges from $150-$400 per square foot. The cheapest container house can cost up to $50,000. We like the variety being offered. You can get a single room house as well as a fancy structural abode built for you. The choice is yours!
