The post-election violence in Kenya from December 2007 to February 2008 in which more than 1,000 people lost their lives has caught the eye of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the chief prosecutor for the ICC, Luis Moreno Ocampo has requested the judges to permit an investigation into the violence. Soon after the 2007, Kenyan elections, the opposition party headed by Raila Odinga had accused the then ruling government of botched election results, and that led to the widespread violence, mostly along the tribal areas.

The violence claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, including children. During the three months of ruthless and gory acts of inhumanity, more than 600,000 people lost their homes and an estimated 3,000 women were brutally raped and that too mostly by the police officers, who were deployed in the areas top provide security. The survivors of last year’s clashes and the ones who have lost nearly everything, including their loved ones are now finally seeing a ray of hope, where the perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions and duly punished.

In a statement, the Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga said.

“We are ready and willing to work and cooperate with Mr. Ocampo to ensure that those who bear the responsibility for the crimes that were committed are brought to justice.”

Former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan is believed to have sent a sealed envelope to Mr. Ocampo after Mr. Annan brokered a peace agreement between the two sides and helped establish a coalition government. The sealed envelope is said to have names high level officers, businessmen and other powerful men, who are believed to be the instigators and supporters of the violence that almost torn apart Kenya.
