Radio, one of the major broadcast media of world uses loads of energy for its broadcasting. San Francisco’s KGO-AM 810 on Thursday became the first ever broadcast media in California to broadcast through solar energy. This project which had begun early this year uses the latest available technology with respect to solar panels. Though the decision to use the present technology caused delay in finishing the project, it has certainly done well for the KGO as it has cut down the load on the power grid.

The radio station uses the SolFocus panels, which were developed in Spain and were custom designed for KGO. These panels are boarded on dual-axis trackers which help it to face the sun at different times of the day, just like sunflower. They are concentrated photovoltaic panels which concentrate the sun rays to generate as much energy as possible. Located near the Dumbarton Bridge which carries a good number of automobile traffic across the San Francisco Bay will help in publicizing the noble step taken by the station.

KGO will now be an ambassador of solar power utilization for its listeners. In my opinion, other media should also try and go solar so that it would benefit both them and the world in terms of energy conservation.
