Large-scale Russian rearmament: shades of the ‘Cold War?’

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev announced that starting 2011, his country will begin large-scale rearmament of its armed forces and military infrastructure. This decision was spurred by what has been observed as NATO’s persistence to assert its presence on Russian borders.

Medvedev said that NATO’s resolution to keep close to Russia’s borders has brought about a great potential for conflicts that can arise in some regions of the world.

Medvedev added that this reaction from Russia requires a qualitative modernization of its army and navy, as well as the need to acquire a new and even stronger military profile for the future. Despite current financial difficulties, Russia shall embark on all necessary refurbishment of its military capacity.

Russia is the world’s largest country. It owns cutting edge nuclear armament. Currently, its military might includes one million personnel.

Only a few days ago, Russia complemented US President Obama for renewed hopes to disarm the world, sending off the message that Russia will join Obama in a new bid for world disarmament.

With Obama’s move to reverse Bush’s plan to install a missile shield in Eastern Europe, Russia suspended its deployment of missiles in Kaliningrad, Russia’s Western outpost that borders European Union members Poland and Lithuania.
