Listen to Music 12 Minutes a Day and Keep the Doctor Away

The cliché that goes,” An apple a day keeps a doctor away” may soon be replaced with a new saying, “A few songs a day keep the doctor away.” According a research conducted by Predrag Mitrovic at the University of Belgrade at Serbia says that listening to music everyday is beneficial for the heart. Mitrovic demonstrates in the research that listening to music for 12 days daily reduces blood pressure, heart rate, patient anxiety, as well as the likelihood of reinfarction and sudden death in acute coronary syndrome patients.

This is indeed an interesting research. Mitrovic has recently presented his study of 740 patients to the European Society of Cardiology 2009 Congress, and is awaiting their approval. Mitrovic and some of his colleagues had applied this theory to their patients way back in April, 1990. They made 370 patients listen to music for 12 minutes everyday while another 370 patients were asked not to listen to music at all.

The results showed that the patients who listened to music had less anxiety while those who did not listen to music showed no such signs. However, Mitrovic is not the first to conduct a study on music therapy. He tells Heartwire that the type of music may matter to have better results. Most of his patients listen to classical music.
