The social network Facebook receives more and more applications, but some of them cannot be safe. It was what verified the research chief of safety of softwares from AVG Technologies, Roger Thompson, when he discovered that one of the applications was a false antivirus.

The discovery was made when Thompson noticed that a Russian website, known by accommodating evil software deliberately, received several references in Facebook. After investigating, the researcher found the origin of the citations: City Fire Department, a game where the players incorporate firemen and they answer to emergency calls.

The application had been modified with an iframe, resource that takes the content of a page for other, that can contain codes that take advantage of flaws in the computer for attacks. If some breach was found, something that happened almost immediately, an antívirus false call Antivirus Pro 2010 was automatically downloaded.
Thompson believed that the game developers could be criminals responsible for the attack. But the malicious code was accommodated in Facebook, indicating that the were crackers that modified the game and had access to creators’ of City Fire Department passwords.

Facebook was already notified. The social network “takes the safety seriously and reacts quickly, but sometimes the problems are difficult to solve”, Thompson said.
