The only way to know about the life of our ancestors and ancient life is to look at signs and marking left by them on the stones and sands of Time. It is intriguing indeed how modern man has walked back in Time almost to the beginning of the Universe.
It is now known that human beings have always not only indulged in hunting, wars, inventing surviving tools but also in creative pursuits. Rock carvings, paintings bear a testimony to it all. But how can one find out about what kind of music they created even before recording came into being?
Of course ancient folk songs, tunes and music has been passed on to generations through renditions but finding a definite proof of Time and Space of particular melody is challenging indeed. Recently historians have found 16th Century carving from Stirling Castle and this could be the oldest marking of the recorded Scottish instrumental music.
A sequence which goes as 0s, Is, IIs carved on wooden medallions in castle’s Royal palace could be the notation of tunes played in the castle during that era on harps, viols, fiddles and lutes.
