Global warming, rising sea levels and wrinkles (!) remind us almost continuously of the mortality of life. Death is imminent and uppermost in most minds’ as people try to escape the clutches of the Grim Reaper.
But it seems Death has broadened his horizon to include home appliances, too. This little lamp appears to be trying to run away in fear of something wicked. The Martyr Lamp designed by The Play Coalition has a head that lights up as the bulb and a tail that connects it to a source of power; its hands and legs are attached to the plug and appear to be trying to pull itself off the socket. Perhaps the lamp has turned over a green leaf and is trying to save energy by disconnecting himself from power. But if he kills the light in unplugging himself, doesn’t it become suicide?
This concept lamp heading towards martyrdom to save energy would definitely get a few laughs from visitors, especially if he succeeds in unplugging himself and is viewed running away with his tail trailing behind him.
