The huge consumption of drugs in the US is responsible for unmitigated drug trafficking. Mexico President Felipe Calderon believes that drug trafficking is facilitated by the consumption of illegal drugs in the United States and corruption in the administration of the neighboring country’s government. He calls on US President Barack Obama to put greater control over the implementation of laws against illegal sale of arms and supplies to Mexican drug cartels. Calderon wants to emphasize that drug trafficking also reflects a phenomenon of corruption of authorities. He questions, too, how many have actually been brought to trial for drug trafficking.
Calderon insists that the fight against organized crime is a common problem between Mexico and the US, and that the two countries should equally confront it. He calls for a change of attitude in society and the US government because, in his opinion, the main cause of the violence plaguing Mexico is its proximity to what he calls the largest consumer of drugs in the world. He says that if Washington does not change its laws, Mexico will become a haven for drugs and crime.
Calderon denies any possibility of negotiating with the drug mafia clans. He believes the idea is “incredibly naive and even stupid” because agreements related to crime do not solve anything, but only allow it to spread like cancer as it benefits from the complicity of many authorities.
