Masters Course in Social Media, but Will It Help?

Birmingham City University has launched a master’s degree course in social media, much to the delight of social networking fans. No doubt, social media is going to be the next face of media itself and it certainly has a huge potential to grow and expand.

Many students have already shown interest in the course and it is expected to cost 6,239 dollars. The program is expected to help people who would venture in to the fields of PR and Journalism. However, there seem to be many issues with both the course and the content.

Firstly, the course seems to be very minimalist and not deep enough for a masters course. Secondly, many people have already become experts at social media and hence a course in social media might be redundant. Thirdly, it might be necessary for the teacher to know more than what we all know about social media today, and that means, knowing more than how to use Twitter, Facebook etc, and how to reach to a larger audience.

In spite of so many issues, it is quite clear that social media is going to take not only the Internet but also real life by force and is going to be the essence of future. The course may have its shortcomings, but it is a step in the right direction.
