According to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center for the People and the Press in America every two in three Americans have said media gave too much coverage to Michael Jackson’s death. Nearly 64 percent feel it was overplayed, 29 percent think the news was covered appropriately and 3 percent felt there was not enough coverage. Well, one can only wish media knew where to draw line and also who can really tell just how much is too much?
Media caters to people and the readership, viewership matters the most. It is a vicious circle of selling a popular story, viewership, sponsorship etc. So if a story gets over hyped media can always point fingers at the TRPs and viewers. So if a scandal about Michael Jackson was raked up some years ago and sold to masses it also means that there were buyers for that story.
Be it Iran’s coverage or death of iconic figure like Michael Jackson, for media it is an opportunity to get viewership. And at the end of the day if a story gets over hyped and over played it is because it sells!
