Designing spaces for a student campus may be the most difficult things for architects because students tend to trash a place if they cannot connect with it. However practical, if the building doesn’t go with the youth that will inhabit the space, it may be rendered useless within a short time.
The Media Island WiFi Pavilion is intended to be the WiFi centre of the Miguel Hernandez University, Alicante, Spain. Designed by the Spanish firm, Moho Architects, the centre is made in the shape of a pentagram. The shape of the building is where the evil begins, and ends, for the rest of the design revolves around practicality and amazing beauty. Although the centre doesn’t look great from the outside in the light of day, it is almost awe-inspiring when viewed at night. Designed in the shape to make maximum use of natural light and ventilation, the pavilion has five different spaces with a central hub.
The building will be elevated about 1.5m creating the illusion that the centre sits on its own floating island. The pavilion is also intended as a central meeting spot for students. The warm lighting, airy spaces and the access to the internet will surely ensure that this space is loved by the students and staff at the university.
