Times of London called them ‘drag-act diva’ and ‘D-list celebrity’ look and suspected that they were worn to seduce Europe. Right it was, they did. Michelle Obama’s media coverage during the G-20 summit and the rest of the Obama’s European trip practically overshadowed the political stories the sojourns were meant to churn out. She got good press for holding the queen, re-wearing a gaudy belt, and wearing an outfit with a humongous white ribbon that looked like a restaurant bib.
With or without falsies, Michelle captured a good part of people’s sightline not because of her White House celebrity but because compared to the other ladies visible beside her, she exuded radiance and élan that can bring enough sunshine to cold and dreary Europe. She flashed her pearly whites more often than the cameras clicked. Her strides looked certain and confident.
It weren’t those falsies that captured Europe, it was her exuberance and confidence. They were right in noticing she did not pretend that they weren’t fake eyelashes. She wore the fakeness to the hilt. Yes, just like a diva would. They certainly fit her stature in London, reeking of power and potential and bearing a demeanor that spells being on top of the situation.
When your fashion is far from perfect but you still manage to run away with it, there’s a word to describe that: style. There is one description that fits Michelle Obama during her European trip: not-dowdy-at-all-unlike-the-rest-of-the-other-ladies.
