Microsoft Axes The Kin Mobile Phone Program. Windows Phone 7 Series Steals Focus

In the month of April this year, Microsoft Corporation in collaboration with one of the biggest wireless carriers in the U.S, Verizon Wireless, had announced the launch of the Kin phones, exclusively on Verizon. The Kin project was Microsoft’s way of targeting the youths with a mobile device that heavily focused on messaging and social networking. However, now Microsoft has announced its decision of removing the Kin phone project and merging the Kin team with the Windows Phone 7 division.

As per reports, not only has Microsoft abandoned its plans to sell the Kin phone in Europe, the company has also entirely folded the project and dumped it. The company has stated that, it would prefer to divert all its attention on the Windows Phone 7 project, but would continue its affiliation with Verizon to sell the Kin phone already available in the market. The Kin project, that was previously known as ‘Pink’ was designed and developed to create an elaborate social networking platform for the users, but this project could never achieve the sole attention of the company,

With the regress of the Kin phones, Microsoft has now left with only Windows Phone 7 series, and the company would have to work even harder to compete with the currently established mobile devices behemoths, such as the likes of Nokia, Apple Inc, and of course, the Google Android operating system.

According to Microsoft,

“We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned… Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones.”
