Microsoft will launch free anti-virus software

Microsoft plans to launch a beta version of its free antivirus next Tuesday (23). Called Microsoft Security Essentials, the application is made in order to find and remove malicious software that steal passwords and other personal information, or to put the computers into “virtual hubs” for distribution of spam.

The program will provide protection to a range of malicious software including viruses, spyware, trojans and rootkits. If the scanner detects a suspicious file that is not yet registered as a malware, the program will alert the researchers from Microsoft so that it is investigated.

Once installed, the program will automatically update, according to Microsoft. The Security Essencials does not occupy much space, except in cases where a dangerous software is detected.

The software will compete with paid programs from McAfee and Symantec, with free security packages. Industry analysts predict that the service will have the tools and similar quality of products paid.

The security companies minimized the release of Microsoft. Executives from Symantec and McAfee rated the software as a palliative option for protection.

The differential on paid products is that they offer features such as encryption, firewall, back-up data, and control of parents, while Microsoft will offer the only exterminator of malicious software.

Good news for consumers. Bad news for the competitors
